The Vortex Team did a very good job in coming up with a compact and powerful media player for Windows. That media player is Light Alloy, an application that will play pretty much any type of multimedia file you give it. It will play but one file, it will play multiple files in a playlist, it will load and display subtitles, and more. So if you want a properly good media player, you will not go wrong by picking Light Alloy.

Should you decide to give Light Alloy a try, the first thing you must do is get a 25.9MB installation file off the web and onto your computer. The setup wizard that’s presented to you when you launch said installation file is not difficult to figure out: select a language, hit Install, hit Use Default Settings in the Basic Options window, and you’re done. The developer recommends that you install Light Alloy on Windows 7.

The interface Light Alloy has to offer is typical of a media player. At the top, where you see the Light Alloy logo, that’s the window in which the video will be played. Underneath it, you will find the playback, volume, playlist, and other buttons. You can customize the way Light Alloy looks by picking one of many themes. You can easily do that from the Setting menu, the Interface submenu. If you have the skills to pull it off, download the Skin Editor and come up with a personalized skin for Light Alloy.

All the functionality you would expect from a media player is provided by Light Alloy. Got a video that you want to watch? Load it into the application, hit Play, go to Full screen mode, and enjoy it. Have some music tracks that you want to listen to? Create a playlist with Light Alloy, start the playback, then unwind as the music plays. Want to watch a French movie with subtitles? Load the video and the subtitles, and you’re ready to go. If you don’t want to get up and shut down your PC once the movie ends, you can set it so Light Alloy will automatically do this for you. You can set it so the computer will be turned off at the movie end, playlist end, or at a specific time.

As mentioned above, Light Alloy is free. Cons:
None that I could think of.

Pros

Light Alloy supports multiple languages and all the popular multimedia formats. Use skins to customize the way the application looks. Play videos (with subtitles), listen to music, create playlists, have the computer shut down when the playback completes. Light Alloy is freeware.

Cons

ider making a kind donation if you like what the application does and if you enjoy using the media player. The money will go towards supporting its development. Using any media player is not a difficult task and Light Alloy doesn’t make things complicated. It is quite easy to access all the functionality the media player has to offer.
